Physical Therapy (PT) may be needed any time a child has difficulty moving in such a way that limits his or her daily activities. Many children are referred to St. Mary’s with debilitating conditions that require the expertise of our highly skilled physical therapists to help them get back on track. Through the use of a variety of innovative techniques, the PT program is designed to help children build strength, improve movement, strengthen skills needed to complete daily activities, restore maximum movement and functional ability and prevent injuries from reoccurring.
Therapists interact with children and their families to assess a child’s condition, establish a management plan and set of goals that strive to maintain the physical, psychological, emotional and social well being of each patient. Caregivers engage children in a range of physical therapy activities including, crawling and walking, weightlifting to build strength around an injury, flexibility exercises to increase range of motion, balance and coordination activities, adaptive play, safety and prevention programs, instruction on how to avoid injuries, and improving circulation around injuries by using heat, cold, exercise, electrical stimulation and massages.
