St. Mary’s Farm to Table Program Cooks Up a Feast with Guest Chefs from Fiamma 41 and Mr. G

St. Mary’s Kids cooked up a grand feast recently at a special cooking class hosted by the Farm-to-Program program. Frank Tramontano, the General Manager of Fiammi 41—a local restaurant in Bayside, and his restaurant’s chef Alex Bonavita taught the children how to make a nutritious vegetable salad and a made-from-scratch salad dressing. Pix 11 News’ Mr. G joined the class.

St. Mary’s cooking classes are an engaging, fun and strategic way to get St. Mary’s Kids excited about nutritious eating. Each class presents an opportunity for our kids to discover the importance of healthy cooking, cleanliness, and the proper and safe use of kitchen tools, all while building self-confidence and improving social and physical skills. All of our classes are hands-on, interactive and tailored to meet the varying abilities of our children.

Launched in January 2014, St. Mary’s Farm-to-Table program promotes nutrition education through hands-on gardening and interactive cooking classes each week at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, located in Bayside. The multi-disciplinary program incorporates nutrition, rehabilitation, and therapeutic recreation goals and is a vital addition to St. Mary’s child life programs – improving daily life for our children and ensuring that their families are better prepared to help them adhere to healthier eating habits at home. The program also advances vocational and life-skills to better prepare St. Mary’s Kids to be self-reliant and productive members of their communities.
Children in the program experience the joys of planting vegetables and herbs in raised garden beds and the thrill of harvesting the fresh produce. The produce is then used in the weekly classes.

St. Mary’s has also created a First Edition Recipe Book for patients and their families to enjoy healthy recipes and seasonal cooking ideas based on meal ideas from our program.
