The Board of Directors and Staff of St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved President and CEO, Burton Grebin, MD.
During his 40-year career in healthcare, Dr, Grebin was a pediatrician, professor, and hospital administrator, but no title was more fitting than unwavering advocate for children and families. Dr. Grebin dedicated his life to improving the health and quality of life for children with special needs and their families. A true champion for the most vulnerable among us, he created programs for kids when none existed.
Under Dr. Grebin’s leadership, St. Mary’s established the nation’s first Palliative Care program for children; New York State’s first long-term home healthcare program for children; New York’s first and largest home care program for children and families with HIV/AIDS; New York City’s first certified Traumatic Brain Injury and Coma Recovery Program for children; and one of only nine interdisciplinary pediatric feeding disorder programs in the U.S.
Dr. Grebin transformed St. Mary’s from a 40-bed nursing home for children into a $100 million healthcare system that is the New York region’s largest provider of post-acute care for children, serving more than 4,000 children in the hospital or in their homes every day. With his guiding vision, St. Mary’s has become nationally and internationally recognized for introducing new care strategies and programs that have revolutionized care for children with special needs.
At the time of his death, Dr. Grebin was the longest serving healthcare system executive in New York City, having led St. Mary’s for the past 36 years
Children’s healthcare has suffered a great loss with Dr. Grebin’s passing. In his memory, St. Mary’s will continue to strive to offer the finest pediatric rehabilitation and specialized care – helping children achieve unlimited possibilities.
Our heartfelt condolences to the Grebin Family: his son Perry; his son Jason, daughter-in-law Lorie and their daughters Lucy, Zoë, and Millie; his nephew Scott Cholewa; and his dear partner Susan Gold. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in honor of Burton Grebin be made to St. Mary’s Heathcare System for Children.
