Dr. Cangemi is the Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children.
Carla P. Cangemi, MD, FAAP, FCCM has been Chief Medical Officer of St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children since October 2022. Dr. Cangemi serves as a Vice President and Chief Medical officer within St. Mary’s executive leadership. She is also the Medical Director of our Inpatient and Home Care Programs.
Prior to joining St. Mary’s, Dr. Cangemi held a position as Vice Clinical Chief of Pediatrics at New York Presbyterian Queens. She was recruited there in 2018 as the Director of the Intermediate Care Unit and Director of the Pediatric Hospitalist Program. Subsequently, Dr. Cangemi was named Director of Inpatient Pediatrics, Director of the Well Baby Nursery and site Director of the Pediatric Hospitalist Fellowship Program of Cornell and Columbia. Along with her clinical and administrative responsibilities, she also was the Site Principal Investigator for the PRISM research study which is an observational cohort study to determine late outcomes and immunological responses after infection with SARS-Co-V-2 in children with and without multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C).
Dr. Cangemi also served as the Director of the Infant Toddler Program inpatient service at PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ in 2016. This program encompasses the treatment of children who require all level of pediatric care including those children who are medically fragile and technology dependent.
Dr. Cangemi completed her undergraduate degree at Iona College, her medical degree at Ross University, and her pediatric residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She then pursued a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at UMDNJ at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, Bristol Meyers Squibb Children’s Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. Upon completion of her fellowship, Dr. Cangemi continued as a Pediatric Intensivist at Bristol Meyers Squibb Children’s Hospital and Hackensack University Medical Center. Dr. Cangemi is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both General Pediatrics and the subspecialty of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. She is also board eligible in Pediatric Hospital Medicine.
