“Brianni has the kind of resilient spirit we see in so many of our little patients.”
Brianni started the St. Mary’s Medical Day Healthcare Program in 2014 after being diagnosed with upper and lower weakness and hearing loss. Brianni attends the program five days a week. In the program, she receives physical, occupational and speech therapy multiple times a week as well as recreational activities to assist with her overall goals. Brianni is working on upper body strength, endurance, independent living skills, and age appropriate linguistic concepts. Over the years, Brianni has made great strides in all disciplines and is able to participate in more dynamic activities despite her disability. Brianni enjoys participating in obstacle courses, which appeal to her competitive personality. Because of her hard work, she is now able to comprehend age appropriate linguistic concepts, speak more clearly and complete higher level cognitive tasks. Brianni has improved her vocabulary, money management skills, strength and endurance in both lower and upper extremities and is able to have complete and concise thoughts. The greatest improvement the Medical Day Healthcare team has seen is her confidence. She is more outgoing, social, and has become a great leader for her peers.
Brianni has the kind of resilient spirit we see in so many of our little patients—the kind of spirit that fuels her dream of becoming a karate instructor when she gets older. Until then, she enjoys watching TV and playing video games, and, of course, coming to St. Mary’s. She loves all the friends she’s made here and we can confidently say the feeling is mutual.
