Introducing the Patient and Family Advisory Council

Introducing the Patient and Family Advisory Council

We are thrilled to announce the launch of a groundbreaking initiative that will better shape our healthcare system’s future—the Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). At St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children, we believe in the power of collaboration, and the PFAC will serve as a pivotal platform for patients, families, and healthcare professionals to come together, share experiences, and contribute to enhancing our services.

What is the PFAC?

The Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) is a dynamic, diverse group of individuals with a shared commitment to improving the experiences of patients and their families at St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children. This council will play a crucial role in advising our organization on various matters, including patient and family experiences, quality care and safety, and the planning, implementation, and evaluation of new initiatives and advocacy efforts.

Who are we looking for?

We are actively seeking volunteers, patients, parents, or other family members who meet the following criteria:

  • You either fall within the young adult patient category or possess three years of firsthand experience in caring for a medically fragile child.
  • Received care from St. Mary’s currently or within the past several years
  • Wants to meet and connect with other caregivers who share similar “lived experiences”
  • Are willing to be a part of a team and partner with healthcare professionals
  • Are empathic, passionate, and able to listen well and respect the perspective of others
  • Can effectively advocate for their child’s requirements and other families’ needs.

What does participation involve?

Patient and Family Advisors will undergo a PFAC orientation and serve as council members for two years. Council meetings are bimonthly, providing flexibility for participation via Zoom or onsite and accommodating the busy schedules of those caring for children with medical complexities. St. Mary’s is committed to respecting the time constraints of our PFAC members and will work closely with those expressing interest in council participation.

This is an incredible opportunity to make a lasting impact on the healthcare experiences of our community. Your unique insights and perspectives are invaluable, and we look forward to building a collaborative, supportive community through the Patient and Family Advisory Council.
