Traumatic Brain Injury and Coma Recovery Program
St. Mary’s pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Coma Recovery Program, the first in NYC, treats children from infancy to 18 years of age with cognitive and physical disabilities related to an injury to the brain from an accident, illness, infection, cancer, or stroke. Known for its leading-edge programs and innovative approaches, the TBI program works toward reintegrating children back into the community while focusing on meeting patients’ goals to improve or manage their conditions.
Patients who have received acute medical management and are ready for intensive rehabilitation are admitted to St. Mary’s TBI program, where pediatric rehabilitation specialists, including occupational, physical, and speech therapists, work along with medical, neuropsychology, and behavioral health staff and the family to help the child regain independence.
Intensive and comprehensive services include state of the art techniques and complementary disciplines such as Reiki, therapeutic touch, acupuncture and animal-assisted therapy. Families are reassured their child is receiving a number of diverse treatments including psychiatry and behavioral management, intensive nutritional care, pain management and education, all offered in-hospital based settings or in our community-based centers.
