Date: February 5-6, 2010, 8AM – 5:30PM
Location: St. Mary’s Hospital for Children Directions

The 2-day instructional course is followed by an International Symposium on DDH. The Course and Symposium are jointly presented by St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children, Elmhurst Hospital Center, and The Mount Sinai Hospital Departments of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation.

International Symposium on DDH
Date: February 7, 2010, 8AM – 2:30PM
Location: Elmhurst Hospital Center Directions

Target Audience
This course and symposium are offered to pediatric orthopedists, pediatric physiatrists, pediatricians, neonatologists, radiologists, sonographers, and allied health professionals—PTs, nurses, PAs, and orthotists—who wish to improve their acumen in the rationale of various methods of DDH treatment, performance and interpretation of infant hip ultrasonography and have a better understanding of all aspects involved in this disease.

Educational Objectives
Instructional Course: The purpose of this course is to provide participants with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to understand the anatomy of the infant hip, perform infant hip ultrasonography in a standard and reproducible manner and to interpret sonographic images of the normal and pathological infant hip.

At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be familiar with use of the sonographic equipment, be able to tune the machine and apply the probe correctly while performing hip sonography, identify the infant hip on a sonographic image, describe the morphologic findings, including the hip type, take measurements, perform a stress test, and distinguish between a normal and pathological hip joint.

Nurses/PTs will be instructed in the rationale of conservative management of DDH, in the application and management of the Pavlik Harness and hip orthoses, and in skin traction and spica cast care.

Symposium: The purpose of this symposium is to educate the participants on the role of ultrasonography in the diagnosis and management of infant hip dysplasia. The symposium will also include discussions on treatment of DDH in different age groups and discussions on the theory and practice of sonographic screening of the infant hip: its efficacy, practicality, and financial implications.
