Christina LaGrega, qualified Zumba fitness instructor, learned from a young age about the significance of giving back to the community. This valuable lesson stayed with her and today, Christina is helping New York’s children and families with special needs at St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children, one of the region’s premier providers of intensive rehabilitation, education, and specialized medical care.
In collaboration with Kertty Bolio of the Fitness Consultants, LLC, Christina hosted a free Zumba event raising over $500 to support St. Mary’s Kids and the 8th Annual Walk on Sunday, May 20th at Ft. Totten Park in Bayside, NY- a grassroots event to raise funds and awareness for children and families with special needs while celebrating a huge milestone in St. Mary’s history – It’s 140th Year Anniversary.
St. Mary’s began caring for New York City’s most vulnerable children in 1872 and since has become one of the premier providers of intensive rehabilitation, specialized medical care and education for over 4,000 children with complex medical and life-limiting conditions.
The day of dancing and fitness held at the Hockey Rink at Little Neck Bay attracted kids of all ages, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who all grabbed their dance partners and got down to Zumba. Guests danced, laughed, enjoyed great music and had a good time overall- all while getting fit and supporting a worthwhile cause.
Christina visited St. Mary’s Hospital for Children a few months back where she immediately fell in love with St. Mary’s Kids. “What I saw was absolutely amazing. I didn’t see pain and suffering, I saw hope and positivity. I saw children who, no matter how bad their day had been, were smiling thanks to all the love and support of those around them including the facilities and staff,” said Christina.
Christina knew she wanted to help in any way she could so she created a Walk team – Fitness with Christina. Christina has been busy urging all her friends and family to support her efforts and the Zumba event helped her raise over $4,000. Christina is still going strong and is looking forward to going above and beyond her goal of $5,000.
You can join Christina and patients, staff, community leaders, corporations and friends and family at the 8th Annual Walk for St. Mary’s Kids on Sunday, May 20th at Ft. Totten Park.
