Former Head of Olympic Works Holds a Torch for Children with Special Healthcare Needs
Bayside, NY, October 12, 2009 – St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children is pleased to announce that George E. Leventis, President of Langan International and Senior Principal of Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, a consulting and engineering firm, has been named the 2009 Honoree of St. Mary’s Annual Tribute Dinner to take place on November 9, 2009 at Gotham Hall in New York City.
Mr. Leventis is internationally recognized for his award-winning work on large-scale engineering engagements. He was responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of the design and construction of the Rion-Antirion Bridge, Greece’s largest infrastructure project of the time and winner of four prestigious awards, including the coveted OPAL Award by the American Society of Civil Engineers. During construction of the bridge, Mr. Leventis was appointed Director General of Olympic Works for the Athens Games and had the privilege of carrying the Olympic torch across the newly opened Rion-Antirion Bridge. Other major projects abroad include concept development for the foundations of the planned tallest building in the world in the Middle East and a 400KM motorway in Greece.
In the United States, Mr. Leventis’ work spans universities, stadia, entertainment complexes, and convention centers, as well as providing engineering services for the United Nations, the New York Jets, and the expansion of New York Hospital over the FDR Drive in Manhattan.
As the 2009 Tribute Dinner Honoree, Mr. Leventis is being recognized for his contributions in raising awareness and funds for critical programs for children with special healthcare needs. A father of three teenage girls, Mr. Leventis’ goal is to help improve the health and quality of life for children with special needs.
